What is the Joint Usage / Education Center?

The Center for Diversity, Accessibility, and Career Development (DAC Center) has been accredited by the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology as a Joint Usage Center for Education (Center name: Education Center for Human Resources Support for Students with Diverse Developmental Characteristics) since September 2018.
Period of accreditation: September 5, 2018 (fiscal year 2018) – March 31, 2021 (fiscal year 2020)

Purpose and Outline

With the increase in the number of students with developmental disabilities at universities and other institutions, the faculty and staff at such institutions are required to provide reasonable accommodations and respond to students based on their developmental characteristics. However, until now, there have been no systematic efforts in Japan to improve the ability of faculty and staff to deal with students with various developmental characteristics, including developmental disabilities.
Therefore, this project aims to serve as an educational center for improving the ability of faculty members to deal with students with various developmental characteristics, and for promoting the development of human resources.

Specific Initiatives

The DAC Center’s activities in the Joint Usage Center for Education are based on the following four pillars.

(1) Holding FD/SD training sessions regarding support for students with developmental disabilities

In-person (on-site) training sessions will be held regularly every year for university faculty and staff across Japan.
In-person (on-site) training will focus on hot topics of the day.
We are also promoting the implementation of remote (webinar) training so that even busy faculty members can participate.

(2) Consultation regarding support for students with developmental disabilities

Staff members with practical experience in supporting students with developmental disabilities at the University of Tsukuba DAC Center will provide individual consultation services to faculty and staff at other universities.
In addition, a consultation network will be established to connect each university, etc., to provide remote consultation via the web, and to create an environment where faculty members can feel free to consult with each other.

(3) Construction and distribution of an effective database for supporting students with developmental disabilities

We will develop an effective database of support information for students with developmental disabilities.
Through the database, we aim to improve the response capabilities of faculty and staff, as well as the self-help skills of students enrolled in each university, etc.

(4) Responding to requests for lecturers for various seminars on supporting students with developmental disabilities

In order to provide knowledge that matches the actual situation at other universities, the University of Tsukuba staff will be dispatched to lecture at seminars and other events in response to requests from the respective universities, etc..
By dispatching lecturers to such institutions, we aim to establish a consensus-based system at each institution.

We will also collaborate on other research and practice projects to actively promote the initiatives necessary to support and respond to students with diverse developmental characteristics.
